The Doppler Shift

was named for the Austrian physicist Christian Doppler who studied it. In this demonstration, move your mouse slowly within the rectangle. If you click on the page, a sound will be heard as each wave passes the microphone image. Waves created as the mouse moves toward the microphone will be closer together in time, and waves created as the mouse moves away will be further apart in time.
NOTE: This simulation works best with Microsoft Edge
